This is a method I’ve used for a while.
And it works because of the way our brains are “wired up”.
This is powerful and (lethally) effective for getting daily/weekly/monthly tasks done in your business.
I personally use it when I really need to get stuff done!
It’s called “The Kanban Method” or “Kanban System”.
All you need for this are 3 things:
- A Whiteboard
- Post-it notes.
- Marker Pen
That’s it.
What is the Kanban System?
There are a TON of academic explanations for this, but as you know, I like simple…
The Kanban System is just simply organizing Post-it notes on a whiteboard in a certain way.
There is software that you can use to do this, but I don’t recommend you use software.
This method is best executed using an actual real physical whiteboard and objects.
You can get a Whiteboard for about $30 bucks on Amazon.
You can get a pack of Post-it Notes for $1 buck a pack.
A Marker pen is about $2.
How To Put This System Into Action
- Divide your whiteboard up into 3 Columns: Non-urgent, Mid-urgent, Very urgent
- Write each task you have to have done by the end of the week onto a post it note.
- Organise those notes on the whiteboard.
Obviously you can’t have every task as non-urgent just like you can’t have every task as very urgent either.
So this forces you to be extremely objective and critical about how you arrange your post it notes on the board.
What you should end up with is something that looks like this, or similar:
Instead of “To do” “in Progress” and “done”.
I use NU, MU, VU (Non-urgent, Mid-Urgent, Very Urgent)
You can use whatever you want for the column headers.
You start with the urgent column first.
Focus on one of the post-it notes in that column and work on ONLY that one until it’s done.
Once you’ve done it, remove that post it note from the board.
You’ve now got a space.
Now move one of the post it notes from the mid-urgent column and move it to the ==> Urgent column.
The idea here is to progressively move everything on the board from the left to right:
Then you do it again…
You work on an item from the urgent column until it’s complete and repeat the process until the board is clear.
This isn’t the “normal” way of doing it.
This is the way I personally do it and it works for me and I’m pretty sure it’ll work for most people who try it too.
What should happen is you end up completing everything for that week.
Here’s Why This Works So Well
When you use a process like this, your brain is physically starting something that it HAS to finish.
Our brains are hard-wired in that way.
When you give yourself a deadline and start a process, your brains natural function takes over.
It’s got to finish what it starts.
It’s nature..it HAS to.
If you’re a procrastinator or you struggle to stay on task, try this out.
This is an extremely powerful method and you’ll be shocked by how effective it is!
